Starting your own photography business requires very little start up money if you already own the equipment you need. The great thing about this is that it can be done from your own home!
You can dedicate any room in your home to your business. This dedicated space can serve as your office.
You don’t even need a dark room given that todays digital cameras don’t require film. All you need is a personal computer and a photo editing program to process your pictures.
To make photography your business you may be required to purchase additional equipment. I am sure you want your photos to stand out in order to attact clients. To make them look professional you may want to have on hand a variety of lenses as well as filters that will create a variety of special effects.
In the beginning you will only need a few of each but as your business grows you will undoubtedly want to purchase more. Another perk is that this can be done in your spare time until your client bases grows to a point where it is supports you financially. However, in the start up phase you can work at it part time so you can increase your experience as well as have some additional income.
You will want to be sure to use your time wisely and take each step seriously so your clients will do the same.
Figuring out a name for your business and perhaps a logo for marketing will be one of the first tasks you must do. Registering with your local government will be the next on your agenda as you want to be a legal business. Once you are registered you will be able to issue sales receipts as well as file taxes.
Once you have done those things you will want to come up with a business plan. Defining the goals for your business is important and a business plan can help achieve that. You should also be able to recognize, at the end of writing your business plan, if your company will actually be a viable business.
You will want to sketch out your plans for marketing and ideas for how you can increase business. You can change this business plan in the future, what you write now is not necessarily put in stone. If you are looking for outside funding for your business the business plan is essential.
Don’t forget to include the business objectives. Objectives help you stay focued on the goals you have for your company. Include such things as your marketing plan and advertising goals. Figure out your pricing structure and include that as well. Don’t forget, your business plan can be changed over time.
When looking for clients begin with friends and relatives. You may want to offer some services at reduced cost in the beginning, when you are trying to get the word out. Hopefully the quality of your work will speak for itself and word of mouth will bring in more customers.
Soon your schedule will be so busy that you will be able to do this full time. Having a solid business plan, and sticking to it, is the key to success. Word of mouth and a good marketing plan will keep you going for many years. Advertise locally and you will see your business grow by leaps and bounds.
You will learn that nearly everyone loves photographs. They live on as treasured memories and are kept for generations. The corporate world also relies heavily on photographs to market their products to the public.
While this all seems very easy to do you must always remember to take your endeavor seriously. Dedication and hard work will take you far in this business. Keep your business plan handy and always refer to it to check on your progress. Its a wonderful feeling to do the work you love on a daily basis.
